MENTAL WELLNESS MONTH-- STAND AGAINST RACISM, JANUARY 2025
As we step into the new year, the YWCA Ulster County is proud to honor Mental Wellness Month this January. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and it’s time to break the silence, remove the stigma, and prioritize our well-being.
Throughout this month, we encourage everyone to take time for self-care, reach out for support, and educate themselves on the importance of mental health. Whether you’re struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, or simply looking to improve your overall mental wellness, remember: you are not alone.
We stand in solidarity with those facing mental health challenges, and we are committed to providing resources and creating a safe space for all. It’s okay to ask for help, and it’s okay to take care of yourself—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Together, we can build a community that fosters healing, resilience, and support.
Why the Hell Are We Still Here? Part 2: A Conversation on Martin Luther King Jr.'s Letter from Birmingham Jail-- Tuesday February 18th at 7pm at 209 Clinton Ave. Kingston, NY 12401
Join us for a powerful and thought-provoking evening on Tuesday, February 18th at 7 PM, at the YWCA Ulster County (209 Clinton Ave. Kingston, NY 12401), in partnership with River Rise, as we continue the conversation from last year’s event. This Black History Month, we’ll delve into Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Letter from Birmingham Jail, exploring the painful question: Why are we still living in a society plagued by racism and inequality?
Why do the systemic inequities King decried more than 50 years ago still persist today? This event will confront the ongoing struggles against racial injustice, examine the role of activism, and reflect on the urgent need for change. Through thoughtful dialogue, we’ll unpack King's powerful words and their relevance to our current fight for equity.
Whether you attended last year's discussion or are joining us for the first time, this event promises to be a vital opportunity for reflection, action, and community engagement.

Through a series of engaging events, discussions, workshops, and online campaigns, the YWCA Ulster County is committed to fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.✊🏻✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

INDIGENOUS PEOPLES MONTH-- STAND AGAINST RACISM, NOVEMBER 2024
November is Indigenous Peoples Month, a time to honor and uplift the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous communities. As we reflect on the legacy of Indigenous peoples, it is crucial that we also acknowledge the systemic racism and discrimination that continues to affect them today.
At YWCA Ulster County, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities and advocate for justice, equity, and inclusion. Racism against Indigenous peoples is a violation of human rights, and it’s our collective responsibility to challenge harmful stereotypes, dismantle inequitable systems, and amplify Indigenous voices.
We invite you to join us this month in committing to the fight against racism. Whether through education, action, or reflection, let’s work together to ensure a future where every person, regardless of their heritage, can live in dignity and peace.

Melanie Delgado: "Crosswalk" - Thursday 9/5/24 at 6pm 51 Maiden Lane Kingston, NY 12401 (YWCA Ulster County)
Maiden Lane Gallery is excited to announce “Crosswalk,” a solo exhibition by Melanie Delgado.
A collection of seemingly unrelated works tied together by chaotic lines, fierce movement and a defiant palette “Crosswalk” brings together Delgado’s unique point of view and diverse vision. Self-taught, Delgado is a notorious rule-breaker, thumbing her nose at tradition while weaving together her own narrative and forging her own path. At first glance, one notices an array of color and tone. Then upon further inspection, we see the continuity and thematic presence Melanie imposes upon the canvas.
“Crosswalk” takes the artist and the viewer on a safe journey from Point A to Point B, navigating Interruption, Chaos and Insecurity. Back in 2023, Delgado began these works in small sessions. Carving out time in her studio between teaching at the Woodstock School of Art and raising a daughter, she began to piece together works taking on Motherhood, Fear and Doubt. Then tragedy struck. Delgado was hit by a car while walking & lost the use of her left arm. After nearly a year of rehabilitation and contemplation, she returned to her studio to finish the job, giving us a collection of work imbued with Determination, Confidence and Love.

Opening reception, Thursday June 6, 6-8pm
51 Maiden Lane
Kingston, NY
Curated by: Melanie Delgado
Maiden Lane Gallery at YWCA Ulster County is pleased to present an exhibition of recent works in jars and on paper!
Both Paper & Suess are Hudson Valley artists and their work is strongly connected to MEMORY.
Marcie’s work-
‘The Hudson Valley painter layers and repeats abstract motifs—like delicate spindles and bulbous pear shapes—to mesmerizing effect, drawing inspiration from personal memories, vintage textiles, and her own small-scale paintings.’ -Escape Brooklyn
‘Most recently I have expanded my studio practice to include bespoke wall murals, weaving, hand-painted ceramic tiles, textile design and block-printing. All of my visual material and patterns originate from my abstractions of short-term memories.’ -Marcie
Ferns work-
‘“What Lies Within” is a collection of nineteen jars, an assemblage of colorful, and color-filled, jars of memories, whimsy, curiosities, and familiar somethings. The jars, which can be thought of as Memoryscapes, contain the detritus of ordinary life; bits and trinkets, odds and ends, that work their way into desk drawers, junk drawers, or a closet, forgotten.’
Please mark your calendars and consider joining us for the opening! Stay tuned for other specials events.
See you soon!

UNTIL JUSTICE JUST IS- April 2024
YWCA is on a mission to eliminate institutional and structural racism. We act every day by raising awareness about the impact of institutional and structural racism and by building community among those who work to advance racial justice.
This year, our racial justice campaign, Until Justice Just Is (UJJI), centers around the theme Building Bridges to Equity, and it will be based on the topics for the 2024 YWCA Racial Justice Challenge, which will be:
• Bodily Autonomy
• Women’s Financial Empowerment/Caregiving
• Gun Violence
• Transportation
This year’s campaign will take place throughout the entire month of April, with the YWCA Racial Justice Challenge, a critical component of the campaign, running April 1–29. Join us all month long as we highlight YWCA Local Association events and initiatives to inspire and engage our network of activists, advocates, and allies and advance racial justice — together.

Week Without Violence Week Long Series of Events 10/16-10/20
Week Without Violence October 16, 2023 - October 21, 2023
Women of all backgrounds and identities disproportionately bear the burden of gender-based
violence — online and in-person — and it is important to recognize the diverse experiences of
survivors. Communities of color, LGBTQ+ people, women and girls with disabilities, veterans,
and those with multiple marginalized identities are just some of the groups that are at
heightened risk for violence, and who often face greater barriers to safety and accessing
resources and support. This week, we are joining YWCA USA and others for #WeekWithoutViolence, to
elevate stories, share information, and raise awareness about #GenderBasedViolence. Please

Learning Objectives include:
- Objective 1: Introduce attendees to the historical roots and functions of mindfulness
- Objective 2: Describe burnout, compassion fatigue and emotional resilience.
- Objective 3: Engage in experiential learning and provide skills to apply to daily living and work.
Compassion fatigue occurs when workers take on the emotional experiences of their clients and burnout develops over time where a worker feels continually asked to meet demands for which they do not have enough resources. Mindfulness has been shown to significantly decrease levels of stress, anxiety and to increase self-compassion and overall mood for client facing workers such as healthcare providers.🪷
